The use of batik has developed in line with the times. Before World War II, for example, part of Dutch, Chinese and Malayan society wore batik trousers with a baju koko, and in the 1950s, batik cloths began to be used as short-sleeved shirts for informal wear. In the 1970s, batik penetrated the world of modern fashion for the first time, from haute couture evening gowns to children's clothing. At the same time, Jakarta's Governor Ali Sadikin initiated the wearing of long-sleeved batik shirts as formal dress in the place of suit-coats. Nowadays, batik is also transformed into shawls, bags, shoes, ties and many forms of accessories.
