COURT BATIK - KRATON CIREBON

CIREBON BATIK
Cirebon under the administration of Sunan Gunung Jati was the oldest Islamic kingdom on Java and, at the same time, an important harbor on the trade route from Persia, India, Arabia, Europe, and China. Its two royal houses, the Kasepuhan and the Kanoman, produce batik cloth with designs and styles found nowhere else. Initially, Cirebon batik was made exclusively for the sultans, particularly in the context of religions rites, palace decoration, and warding off evil forces. Cirebon batik designs give evidence of Chinese cultural influence. This is apparent in, among other things, the horizontal arrangement of ornamentation, as with painting, and the idiosyncratic mega and wadasan ornaments in the Mega Mendung and Wadasan designs.

The use of batik cloth as part of dress was pioneered by the Sultan's wives. Generally, Cirebon batik designs depict the palace ambiance like the Kereta Kasepuhan , Kapal Kandas , Peksi Naga Liman, and Cerita Panji.
