Chinese Batik is that made by Chinese or people of Chinese descent and displays designs incorporating such mythical Chinese animals as the naga, lion, phoenix Chong), turtle, kilin (composite mythological animal), gods and goddesses, ornaments deriving from ancient Chinese ceramics, and the mega or cloud ornament, combined with the classic red or red-and-blue color scheme. The buketan is also found on Chinese batik, especially the type influenced by Dutch Batik, and Dutch Batik colors may be used, as well. Furthermore, some Chinese batik displays court batik ornaments, and some a red, blue, and soga¬ brown color combination. Most of Chinese Batik was used, besides as a fashion fabric, as an accessory in religious rites like as altar cloth.
Although the Chinese came to the archipelago long before the Dutch, Chinese Batik did not make an appearance until several decades after Dutch Batik and was sold in batik markets along Java's north coast. The Chinese began to make batik about the beginning of the 19th century, before they entered into the real batik business. Their marketing ability and business perseverance led to batik becoming an export commodity. They competed with native Muslim, Indian, and Arab traders.
