BATIK DESIGNS - DESIGN STYLE

The ornamentation on a piece of batik consists of ornaments arranged so as to construct a total composition. Traditionally speaking, there are numerous batik designs. To facilitate recognition, they can be grouped by shape and style.

Design - Style

Based on style, there are two types of batik design, namely inland and coastal.

  Inland Batik

Inland batik derives from the royal courts or is strongly court-inspired, with regard to ornamentation as well as coloration (Fig. 1).

  Coastal Batik

Coastal batik differs from inland batik. Because it is made in the coastal regions where foreign influence is plentiful, coastal batik incorporates outside cultural elements in its ornamentation and coloring (Fig. 2).
